Suppose I should have at least a
short little write-up on this storm since it wasn't a TOTAL dud. GFS
had us pegged at 1.15" and things were looking very nasty for a large
part of the day. I was seriously thinking I wasn't going to work the
next day expecting Quad City-wide power outages with over an inch of
ice. Power lines are only designed to take on 1/2", so if this would
have happened, you'd be one in a million type of lucky to have power.
So, got up around 4:00 in the morning as I always do and things were
already looking pretty icy. The pine tree in the back driveway was
already iced over and weighted down pretty well. Again, since I didn't
take very many pictures, and the ones I did aren't anything to write
home about, I might as well fill this page in somehow. So, here's the
first shot of the day, about 4:40 a.m. as head for work.
Now I'm at work, a little after 7. By this time it is around 33°
and regular rain is falling. It's still freezing, but not as well as
before.
So, little glazing is occurring, and I'm hoping temperatures will soon
drop to turn things interesting. Lunchtime comes around and I head to a
park in Hampton (can't think of the name right now) for a few shots. By
this time I wasn't impressed at ALL. Scenery was a little cool, but
nothing close to what I was expecting.
I was trying to shield the lens from the rain and my thumb got in the
way. Oops. Ruined a prize-winning photograph. Darn.
In some places, 1/2" was pretty much the extent of it. By now temps are
around 35 and show ZERO signs of changing. Ice is already starting to
melt all around. If it had been ice the entire night/morning, we would
have been pretty screwed right around now.
Later on that night. Yep, good stuff. Interesting, exciting. We had one
more small round of freezing rain later in the night but nothing
special at all. A lot of the ice had already melted and I saw zero
damage.
This is the next night. I figured I'd try and get out to get something
since it still looked pretty cool. I wish I would have had the camera
during the day when the sun was out. It was a pretty spectacular scene.
Quickly ran out of ideas so I just ran back home. But, being
dissatisfied with the TWO shots I took while I was out, I wanted to get
something else. As I was pulling in the driveway, I noticed that tree
pretty lit up by oncoming headlights and it looked pretty neat.
Naturally, my camera couldn't pick it up exactly how I wanted. It was a
pretty bright scene while standing there.
Pointed back toward the house.
...aaaaaand back to the highway. That was an ambulance going by right
here. The lights weren't on but he was absolutely flying.
So, really didn't too creative at all here. My motivation has just been
down in the dumps lately. Hopefully I'm not losing interest in
photography. Normally I'd be out every night looking for something new
to shoot. I don't know if work is just plain burning me out or what.
But anyway, all the above pictures were taken around the house. Pretty
boring, I know. I have a small Christmas tree in my room for some
reason and I wanted to take a long exposure shot at f/22 because I was
again bored. So, this pretty much concludes the most non-interesting
entry I think I've ever had on this site. Oh well...
