Took a quick trip down
into some closed off roads on my way up town to snap a few pictures of
the swollen river. All of them are primarily in the same stretch since
I was sort of in a hurry. It actually crested a little over a foot
higher after these pictures were taken. This really isn't too exciting
though considering I've seen this river flood much higher than this in
the past. August rains were just torrential and eventually the
landscape ran out of places to put it. It didn't take long for the
waters to start rising.
This shot is shortly after
squeezing through the "Road Closed Ahead" barricades turning onto the
road. I was pretty surprised to see the water up this high in the
fields considering the river is approximately 2 miles from this area.
Water table were at a max I'd say.
This was shot from the main
road (only road) going through Osborn. Normally the river can't even be
seen from this location. Normal river level is about 10-15 feet past
that last tree just to the right of that shed. That thing was probably
7-8 feet tall to put in perspective how high the water was.
Again, water level is
about 10-15 feet past that last tree right in the center. This was
standing right off the shoulder of the road. I'm still trying to figure
out if the water actually came up and over the road after I was
here. It had to have been pretty dang close.
I don't know too much about
horses, but this thing was either bothered by something or he was just
trying to get some excercise. He was trotting around that little cage
over and over and over again. You can't see it but the water was
actually starting to flood into the pen where it slopes down. Every
time he'd make a turn he'd just eye me like he wanted me to let him out
or something.
Chickens were sure having a
feast. I've never seen them running around like this, but I'm thinking
their cage was under water or something so the owner let them out. I
constantly saw them pluck worms from the ground. It was pretty funny
watching them for some reason. Then again I'm pretty easily amused.
This was someone's driveway.
I'm pretty far off the river right now. Even though the land is pretty
flat just off the banks, this was still kind of impressive. The water
was flowing pretty good over that tie in the lower center. I saw a TON
of carp just grazing the flooded bank too, but every time I'd walk up
to try and grab a shot, they'd get freaked and hurry off.
Lundeen's Landing is just off
to the left here. This is actually pretty significant here. I've never
seen the road completely under like this. A few days prior I had driven
through here near the I-80 bridge (which is around the corner quite a
ways) and it was only halfway up my tire. If I tried this now it'd be
damn near up to my window. This was a pretty cool site.
The main office at Lundeen's.
Those stilts were pretty tall too. Sucks for them business-wise, but I
was sure happy to get the chance to grab some action around here
finally, albeit sort of boring.
Looking back to where I came
from.
This was pretty convenient.
I've noticed this shot for quite some time now and always wanted to get
a shot. I like the tree and the white fence running along the
road. The only thing I wanted differently though was to be almost
right up against the fence. Obviously I couldn't do that here. I might
just try and get another one some other time. It may not be much, but I
see it every day on the way home from work and just kind of grabs your
attention, especially with bright blue skies.
That's pretty high. That's well
away from the river as well. Man that had to have stunk when the water
receded.
After making a 22-point
turnaround, I started heading back the other way. Yeah, turning radius
in that thing isn't the best.
On the other side of the road,
there were literally hundreds of frogs jumping right off of the gravel
shoulder and into the ditch. I couldn't believe how many there were.
Obviously there will be some near water, but this was an unusual
amount. It was pretty strange. I was actually just fooling around and
trying to get a shot of one, but I saw this little guy instead. yeah,
not much, but eh, whatever.
Heading back the way I came. I
think it's safe to say there was currently nobody living in that house.
The water was just under their deck which was up on stilts.
Yep, more flooding. I've also
never seen water up in this yard.
This is the south
entrance to my favorite backroad. It's been awhile since it has been
under water. I just assumed they trenched something new to divert the
flood waters, but apparently not. I didn't have time to actually go
down the road.
This was heading down a
backroad that I've again never seen close to water. I wish I would have
taken a shot of some cows splashing around in it. They are straight
ahead in this shot. It was pretty funny. The two bigger ones would keep
dunking their heads and the babies would hop around, almost like
kittens, every time they did it.
This is looking eastbound
toward I-80. Actually, a few days later I would be standing in about a
foot and a half of water right here. I really should have went down
then, but this was kind of the only time I had to do this.
