9-1-10

Thought I'd throw together a few lightning outings this year. Ok, the ONLY lightning outings I've had this year. I'm ready for 2011 to begin and put this year behind me. Even though we got a few tornadoes on May 10th, I had to sit idly by and watch chaser after chaser nab amazing storm after amazing storm. To add insult to injury, this year has been absolutely horrible for lightning. I should probably be more positive and look at the brighter side of things, but it is extremely hard to when things happen like they did in 2010 so far.

First outing was June 1st. These results were ok, but they could have been better. I was missing the best bolts behind me. I'd sit and point one direction knowing if I'd wait long enough I'd get something good, but all the action kept happening behind me. I'd switch positions, point behind me, then the action would start going off where I was just previously pointed. I was still lucky enough to grab some at least.

June 2nd. This low-topped updraft was pretty sweet I guess. I watched this thing form from a tiny, innocent little cumulus to a light rain shaft, then go on to produce an absolute deluge in Whiteside County about an hour later.

Shelf moving in on the left with a closer bolt landing JUST in the frame.

These next two are actually cropped in quite a bit. They are almost identical, even hitting in almost the same exact spot.

Positive strike. Dang lower level clouds prevented a good shot from being an excellent shot.

Last shot of the night before the mosquitos made me retreat. They are pretty ruthless out there. I was even sitting in the truck with the window mount too. I couldn't imagine how bad they'd be if I was set up on a tripod. Yes there are a few dead pixels in the image. Can you spot them?
